To broaden participation in computing for African American upper elementary school (4th and/or 5th grade students)
Project Working Title:
CREATE2 CS: A Culturally Relevant Environment for African American/Black Students To be Empowered and Engaged in CS
Project Idea or Description:
The overall goal of this CS For All project: CREATE2 CS: A Culturally Relevant Environment for African American/Black Students To be Empowered and Engaged in CS is to introduce Black students in grades four and five to computational thinking and computer science skills via a gamified, culturally responsive educational technology tool. This goal will be accomplished by enlisting the assistance of current Black computer science students, at a historically black university, in the design and development of the tool. This technology will allow students who may not have the opportunity and/or resources to learn the skills fundamental for success in the computer science discipline. This project will incorporate a participatory design process to include the perspectives of the students in the development of this novel tool.
How will this idea advance broadening participation in computing?
It will allow Black/African American students to enhance their computing identity and introduce them to the world of computing at an earlier age
